If you know someone who is suffering in a abusive or violent relationship
There are 3 important steps:
- Recognise that the abuse or violence is happening – this is wrong in any type of relationship
- Accept that the victim is NOT to blame
- Seek help, advice and support.
Advice from young people to young people
- Stay out of the way , don’t get caught up in the argument. Take yourself, brothers and sisters out of the room.
- Think about what is going on, keep a level head.
- If you can write down how you feel.
- Stick together with brothers and sisters.
- Don’t let it take over your life.
- Be brave, stay calm.
- Have cuddles with Gran or with brothers and sisters.
- Tell an adult you trust.
- Discuss with the abused parent what is happening and think of a code word that means ring for help.
- Plan an escape route.

When you are attacked at home or see your parent attacked you may feel:
- Fear
- Anger
- Shame
- Unable to concentrate
- Feel quiet and withdrawn
- Be confused
- Unable to sleep or eat
- Get frightened easily, be nervous and tense.
Any type of abuse is about having power and control over another person
Domestic Abuse or Violence is NOT caused by being drunk, drugs or being stressed
There are many different agencies who can offer help, assistance, support or advice.

- A Social Worker ( if you have one)
